Brake Shoes:

It’s an arc shaped metal pieces lined with heat resistant fibre, forces against the brake drum to slow down the wheel rotation.

Truck brake shoes are typically combined of several key components that work together to facilitate effective braking:

  1. Backing Plate: The backing plate is the primary structure of the brake shoe, usually made from steel or cast iron. It provides strength and stability to the shoe and serves as a mounting point for other components.

This backing plate will fitted on the axle hub with the help of high graded cap screws. Also, this plate supports to fix the brake shoe roller and S-Cam shaft for braking support.

  1. Friction Material: Friction material are plays a crucial role in this braking system, the material is made from various compounds like asbestos (in older models), ceramic, semi-metallic, or organic materials. The choice of friction material affects performance characteristics such as stopping power, wear resistance, and heat dissipation. Generally, these friction shoes are riveted on the brake metals, which helps us during serviceable time.

  2. Spring Mechanism: Brake shoes come equipped with a spring mechanism that helps return the shoes to their original position after braking. This mechanism typically includes return springs, which pull the shoes back into place, and hold-down springs that keep the shoes securely attached to the backing plate. Slack adjustor are attached to the another end of this spring mechanism.

  3. Adjusting Mechanism: Many brake shoes include an adjusting mechanism that ensures the correct distance between the shoes and the drum. This feature helps maintain optimal performance and compensates for wear over time.

The primary function of truck brake shoes is to provide reduce the vehicle speed while pressing the pedal against the brake drum when the brake pedal is engaged. This friction generates the necessary force to slow down or stop the vehicle. The uses of truck brake shoes include:
